Introduction

John-Paul Berauer, MD, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, received his Bachelor of Science in biology, psychology and neuroscience from Loyola University Chicago and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed his pediatric internship, residency and chief residency at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Illinois. Dr. Berauer completed his pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition fellowship, as well as a one-year fellowship in advanced and transplant hepatology, at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine.

Led by Dr. Berauer, the Intestinal Rehabilitation of Children’s (IRoC) Program offers a full spectrum of services for infants and children with short bowel syndrome and intestinal failure who receive parenteral nutrition. Patients receive comprehensive care from a team of experts that includes pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric surgeons, a registered dietitian, speech-language pathologists (feeding specialists), nurse coordinators and a social worker. The goal of this multidisciplinary approach is to achieve complete enteral independence from parenteral nutrition and avoid transplantation using medical, surgical and nutritional rehabilitation strategies.

In his spare time, Dr. Berauer enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors with his family.
