Doctor at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is One of a Dozen in U.S. to Treat This Rare Disorder

In December 2024, college senior Ruth spiked a fever and started experiencing unexplained headaches, vomiting and fatigue. Doctors were eventually able to diagnose Ruth with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disease that affects the immune system, but they could not determine the underlying cause. Ruth was transferred to Children’s where Dr. Shanmuganathan Chandrakasan not only determined the underlying cause but was also able to find a novel approach to treating Ruth’s HLH that was gentler, harnessing her own immune system (T cells) to do most of the work.
