Mom Saves Teen's Life with CPR After He Collapses at Track Practice: 'Breathe for Your Mama' (Exclusive)
Collin Gates, a 14-year-old Georgia student-athlete, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at track practice due to a rare, previously undiagnosed congenital heart condition, but his mother, Tamara Gates, saved his life by performing CPR until help arrived. After undergoing open-heart surgery and making a full recovery, Collin has been cleared to return to sports, while he and his mother hope their experience encourages more families and schools to learn CPR and be prepared for cardiac emergencies.

Adrian Johnson, a Tucker High School basketball standout, has lived with a pacemaker since he was 15 months old after being diagnosed with complete heart block, but he kept his condition private for years while pursuing academics and athletics. Now, after receiving a leadless pacemaker and overcoming health challenges, Adrian is sharing his story to inspire other teens facing medical obstacles, encouraging them to be brave and reminding them they are not alone as he prepares to play college basketball alongside his twin brother at Wallace State College.

AJ Johnson, a Tucker High School senior and basketball player committed to Wallace State Community College, overcame significant health challenges, including a rare congenital heart condition that required a pacemaker since infancy and multiple surgeries throughout his life. With the support of his family and medical team, AJ persevered through setbacks to continue playing basketball and now hopes his journey will inspire others to stay strong and resilient in the face of adversity.

They successfully implanted an experimental pacemaker inside the child designed specifically for infants. It’s one of a handful of procedures done around the world.
