Introduction

Kiran B. Hebbar, MD, FCCM, is a Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, an Eminent Physician at Emory, and Medical Director of the Simulation Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. As a pediatric intensivist, Dr. Hebbar’s work integrates simulation, patient safety, quality improvement, systems engineering and human factors to improve outcomes for critically ill children.

Dr. Hebbar is internationally recognized for advancing translational simulation—using simulation not only for education, but also to redesign clinical systems, optimize healthcare environments, identify latent safety threats, and enhance team performance before patients are exposed to risk. His work has influenced pediatric resuscitation, ECMO, sepsis care, hospital design, and multidisciplinary crisis response, and has been adopted nationally and internationally.

An accomplished educator and mentor, Dr. Hebbar has developed innovative curricula for residents, fellows, nurses and interprofessional teams, while mentoring more than 50 pediatric critical care fellows and numerous faculty members. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, multiple book chapters, and the critical care handbook Act Quickly, Think Slowly. His contributions have been recognized with numerous teaching and innovation awards, including Emory School of Medicine’s Outstanding Teacher Award, the DAISY Award for Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes, and designation as an Emory Eminent Physician and one of Atlanta Magazine’s Top Doctors.
