Certificate of Need Application Approved for New Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Hospital

November 9, 2018

ATLANTA (November 9, 2018) – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta today announced that it has received approval from the Georgia Department of Community Health for a Certificate of Need (CON) application related to its planned 446-bed pediatric hospital in Brookhaven. The CON approval is a key milestone for the new hospital and Children’s planned North Druid Hills campus, located in DeKalb County at the Northeast intersection of I-85 and North Druid Hills Road.

Specifically, the application related to additional beds and expanded services that, when combined with a previously-approved Letter of Determination from the Georgia Department of Community Health, allows Children’s to relocate the beds and services of Egleston Children’s Hospital to a new location and expand to meet future needs.

“We are pleased that the Department recognized the long-term value of this new hospital for Georgia’s current and future generations of children,” said Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta CEO Donna Hyland. “We remain laser focused on top quality patient care and operational excellence at all of our facilities as we plan to start construction on the new hospital in early 2020.”

By 2025, the North Druid Hills campus will include the relocated hospital, two support staff buildings, the Center for Advanced Pediatrics, more than 20 acres of greenspace, and miles of walking trails and paths on and around the site. In addition to its investment in the campus, Children’s is committed to improving the surrounding area by investing more than $40 million in traffic and infrastructure improvements.

Completion of the support buildings in 2020 will enable Children’s employees to vacate current offices on the site of the planned hospital, allowing construction to begin. After the construction of the new hospital is complete, Children’s will no longer operate an inpatient facility at Egleston. The long-term use of Egleston’s campus will be determined during the planning process over the next several years.

Additional information and application deadlines can be found at www.choa.org/CON.
