Submit a Research Story Idea

Are you a provider or researcher who is involved in exciting research? Our external communications team would love to hear from you.

At Children’s, we facilitate advanced pediatric research, training and innovation so that we can deliver unique care and the best outcomes possible for our patients and families. To maximize internal and external communications opportunities for research content, we have developed a formal research content review process. This process should be followed closely for the submission and evaluation of all research stories originating from Children’s.

Children’s physicians and research scientists may submit story ideas through the Research Communications Intake Form. This form was designed to collect key information about your research project. It is the first step for receiving potential research communications support.

Email completed the form, along with any supporting documents, as an attachment to researchstoryideas@choa.org. If any additional information is needed or resources can be provided, a member of the Children’s public relations team will be in touch directly with next steps.

Form submissions will be evaluated by our research leadership team to determine if the work meets criteria for communications support based on System priorities and likely media interest.

  • Step 1: Melinda Mathis, VP of Research and Academic Administration at Children’s, will review form submissions based on the Children’s research strategic objectives and whether projects meet criteria established in the Research Communications Guidelines. Melinda will share updates with Lucky Jain, MD, Chief Academic Officer at Children’s, as needed/li>
  • Step 2: Melinda will then bring viable intake forms as needed to standing weekly meetings with Stacy Stephans-Heilman, PhD, Director of Pediatric Research Operations and Assistant Professor at Emory University; Clinton H. Joiner, MD, a Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Children’s; and Liz McCarty, Executive Administrator and Vice Chair for Administration at Emory University. This group will take the first pass at prioritizing potential stories on an ongoing basis.
  • Step 3: The Children’s + Emory Pediatric Institute operations team will review and approve tier 3 stories
  • Step 4: The Children’s external communications team will insert approved stories into an editorial calendar that details timing, audience and channel for dissemination. Note: If a relevant paper publication is timely and aligned with research priorities, editorial calendar exceptions may be granted.

Contact Julie Jordan, Marketing Coordinator for Research on the Children’s external communications team, at julie.jordan@choa.org if you have questions or need assistance.
