Awards and Acknowledgements

Congratulations to Dan Wechsler, MD, PhD, our Section Chief of Pediatric Oncology, who has assumed the role of the president of the ASPHO Board of Trustees for the 2026-27 term. A dedicated ASPHO member since the late 1990s, Dr. Wechsler has played a key role in shaping the organization through leadership positions on the program planning and education committees.

Dr. Wechsler is a member of the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. A board-certified pediatric oncologist, he specializes in the treatment of childhood leukemia.

Additionally, we would like to recognize Karen Effinger, MD, MS, who received the Northwestern Mutual Award for Excellence in Childhood Cancer Survivorship. This award annually recognizes an ASPHO member in good standing whose exceptional contributions have advanced the field of childhood cancer survivorship.

Dr. Effinger is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Kathleen V. Amos Chair for Cancer Survivorship, Emory University School of Medicine, and Co-Director of the Survivor Program, Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Kudos to Peter Carlson, MD, PhD, and Zuri Hudson, DO, for receiving the 2026 ASPHO Early Career Travel Awards. They will be presenting at the Hematology and Oncology Luminary Presentation with Selected Abstracts session on Friday, May 1 from 8 to 9:15 a.m.
