Little boy smiles in garden of pediatric hospital

At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, our team of pediatric experts cares for newborns, children and teens with conditions resulting in incontinence due to pelvic and anorectal conditions. Some of the pelvic, anorectal, colonic and spinal cord conditions we treat within our Pelvic and Anorectal Care Program include:

  • Anorectal malformations, including imperforate anus, cloaca and anal stenosis
  • Encopresis
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Fecal or urinary incontinence due to neurological compromise
  • Hirschsprung disease
  • Intestinal motility disorders
  • Intractable constipation
  • Spina bifida
  • Spinal dysraphisms
  • Spinal trauma
  • Spinal tumors

What are anorectal malformations?

Anorectal malformations are birth defects of the anus and rectum. The cause of anorectal malformations is unknown.

A child born with a condition like anorectal malformation or Hirschsprung disease, or who has experienced tumors or trauma in the pelvis, may have bowel accidents, even after surgery earlier in life. At Children’s, we understand how this issue affects all areas of a child’s and family’s life. Through our Pelvic and Anorectal Care Program—the only program of its kind in the Southeast—we can help improve your family’s quality of life with our specialized services and offerings.

Pelvic and Anorectal Care Clinic

Our multidisciplinary team of highly qualified pediatric surgeons and specialists host a weekly clinic at the Center for Advanced Pediatrics. During your child’s initial visit, he will undergo a comprehensive evaluation. Our team will then meet with your family to design a specialized treatment plan tailored to your child.
