This course is designed for physical therapists looking to satisfy the requirements necessary for initial certification, recertification, and maintenance of ABPTS Board-Certification in Sports Physical Therapy as well as athletic trainers providing sidelines care for athletes. This course will cover acute injury and illness management for the athlete, including emergency management systems, bloodborne pathogens and preventing disease transmission, primary and secondary assessment, airway and ventilation management, cardiac and respiratory emergency management, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, shock, muscle/bone/joint injury management, and head/neck/spine injury management. Please note that this program will not provide a certification in CPR or First Aid.

Target Audience/Description
This course is designed for physical therapists looking to satisfy the requirements necessary for initial
certification, recertification, and maintenance of ABPTS Board-Certification in Sports Physical Therapy as well as
athletic trainers providing sidelines care for athletes. This course will cover acute injury and illness management
for the athlete, including emergency management systems, bloodborne pathogens and preventing disease
transmission, primary and secondary assessment, airway and ventilation management, cardiac and respiratory
emergency management, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, shock, muscle/bone/joint injury
management, and head/neck/spine injury management. Please note that this program will not provide a
certification in CPR or First Aid.
Continuing Education Units
Continuing Education Credits for Physical Therapists have been applied for through the APTA Georgia for 14
contact hours. These credits may apply toward licensure in other states. This course has been approved to
meet the Acute Management of Injury and Illness (AMII) requirement for both initial certification and maintenance
of Board Certification in Sports Physical Therapy.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 14 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.
Course Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the emergency medical responder and the components of the EMS system.
- Identify appropriate steps to take to limit transmission of disease.
- List the steps of an on-field primary and secondary assessment.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of a compromised airway and demonstrate management of the unconscious athlete.
- Recognize the signs of cardiac emergencies and demonstrate the provision of care in the chain of survival for cardiac emergencies.
- Recognize the signs of medical emergencies due to environment, anaphylaxis, poisoning, substance abuse and mental status changes.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of shock.
- Demonstrate the management of muscle, bone and joint injuries through proper reduction, fracture care, immobilization and transport.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of head, neck and spine injury and demonstrate proper spine injury management protocol for athletes with and without athletic equipment.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of concussion.
- Identify the signs, symptoms, and acute management steps for injuries to the face, chest, thorax, and abdomen.

Instructors
Kevin M.A. Sullivan MS, LAT, ATC
Kevin is a certified athletic trainer with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He has been with Children’s since 2015
as the athletic trainer for Ola High School in McDonough, Ga. Prior to his time at Children’s, Kevin attended
Georgia State University where he graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. He then
continued his education at Lenoir-Rhyne University where he earned his Master of Science in Athletic Training in
2015. He is a certified CPR instructor with the American Heart Association and is a member of the National
Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Georgia Athletic Trainers’
Association. Kevin specializes in prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of acute injuries and
illnesses.
Stephanie G. Vasquez, MEd, LAT, ATC
Stephanie is a certified athletic trainer with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She has been with Children’s since
2016 as the athletic trainer at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, GA. Prior to her career at
Children’s, she worked with women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and men’s golf teams at Clayton State University.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from The Florida State University in 2009 and her Master
of Education in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Human Performance from Georgia College & State University in
2011. She is a Red Cross Certified Instructor for First Aid/CPR/AED, Basic Life Support, and Emergency
Medical Response. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Southeast Athletic
Trainers’ Association, and the Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association. She is the award and honors committee
chair for the GATA and serves on the honors and awards, scholarships, and hall of fame committees for SEATA.
Stephanie specializes in injury prevention, risk management, and the acute care of injuries and illnesses.
Phil Wyre, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS
Phil is a certified athletic trainer with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He joined Children’s in September,
2007 after six years with HealthSouth and has dedicated the rest of his 24-year Athletic Training career to
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Phil earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Georgia
Southern University in 1990 and his Masters of Sports Medicine from Georgia State University in 1995. Phil
Is American Heart Association CPR Instructor certified for Heartsaver and Basic Life Support (BLS) for
Healthcare Providers. Phil is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Southeast Athletic
Trainers’ Association, Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association and the National Strength and Conditioning
Association (Retired). Phil served as the Athletic Trainer at Dunwoody High School for 10 years before
transitioning to Union Grove High School in 2012, where he continues to provide comprehensive care to
student-athletes. Throughout his career, he has specialized in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and
rehabilitation, with a strong commitment to the health, safety, and performance of the athletes he serves.
