Dr. Slesnick is an associate professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. He previously attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas for medical school, a pediatrics residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship. His clinical focus is non-invasive imaging, both echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), and he serves as the director of Pediatric Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Emory University.
From a research standpoint, Dr. Slesnick has an interest in both structural heart disease as well as myocardial assessment. CMR serves a complementary role to echocardiography for morphological evaluation of children born with congenital heart disease. New advances in CMR technology, such as improved time-resolved, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography, non-contrast angiograms, and four-dimensional flow velocity imaging offer unique insights into a patient’s cardiac anatomy. Advances in tissue characterization, such as T1 mapping and extra-cellular volume quantification, offer novel ways to assess myocardial changes and viability. Finally, through collaborations with Georgia Tech, Dr. Slesnick and his team are working on advanced computational modeling of patient-specific CMR images to allow both surgical planning and long-term prognostication in complex congenital heart defects such as double outlet right ventricle and single ventricle anatomies.
