Introduction
Kristan Scott, MD, MSHP, is a Neonatologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Neonatology at Emory University School of Medicine. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Scott focuses on improving outcomes for newborns and their families, particularly in maternal and infant health, health equity and evidence-based preventive care.
Dr. Scott completed his pediatrics residency and chief residency with the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center. He subsequently completed fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He also completed the National Clinician Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master of Science in Health Policy Research and received advanced training in health services and outcomes research.
Dr. Scott’s research examines how health systems, clinical practices and policies influence maternal and newborn health. His work has included studies of postpartum healthcare utilization among families of infants requiring neonatal intensive care, disparities in maternal and infant outcomes, and preventive care for newborns. A major focus of his current research is understanding increasing parental refusal of newborn vitamin K prophylaxis, the consequences of non-receipt and strategies to improve delivery of this important preventive intervention.
Through his clinical care, research and advocacy, Dr. Scott aims to develop and evaluate approaches that improve the quality and equity of care delivered to newborns and their families and translate research findings into meaningful changes in clinical practice and health policy.
