Introducing the Center for Advanced Pediatrics: A better way to treat children and teens with complex care needs
At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, we see so many patients with complex conditions who require frequent visits to different specialists and clinics. One such example is Caleb, a 6-year-old with cystic fibrosis (CF). He and his family face the challenges of coordinating care with different teams and traveling to different physicians multiple days a week. We knew there had to be a better way.

The sixth floor will house the Judson L. Hawk, MD, Clinic for Children, which will encompass 20 outpatient specialty offerings for children with a wide range of conditions. The Sibley Heart Clinic will also be on the sixth floor. Our pediatric cardiologists and staff will evaluate and treat children and teens with congenital heart defects.
Almost an entire floor of the new building will be dedicated to the treatment and research of conditions related to breathing and airways, bringing together the areas of pulmonology, allergy and immunology, cystic fibrosis (CF) and sleep. The fifth floor will also include clinical research space, such as a lab, a pharmacy and exam rooms for patients to participate in clinical research trials.
Neurology, neuropsychology and neurology diagnostics services will be offered on the fourth floor. The pediatric-trained staff will focus on the relationship between the brain and behavior, and will help treat patients with neurological complications, such as brain tumors and cerebral palsy. Next to the clinic space, we will offer neurology diagnostics. The ability to have diagnostic capabilities adjacent to the clinic will improve the patient experience by enabling a smooth transition between a diagnostic exam and clinic visit.
The third floor will act as a dedicated center for endocrinology and diabetes patients. This space will allow specialists to provide coordinated, comprehensive care for these complex conditions. This floor will also house space for feeding disorder assessment and treatment. The feeding disorder space will be designed with family respite spaces, such as a family lounge and nap rooms.
The second floor will feature multispecialty clinic space for eight different specialties, such as rheumatology and gastroenterology. Also, there will be specialized exam rooms for medically complex patients and space for physicians to consult on patients they treat together. Patient families will be able to relax in a large, light-filled waiting room.
The first floor will house an open lobby, cafe, teaching kitchen and clinical space. In the clinical space, our pediatric otolaryngologists (ENT) and audiologists will host clinics to help patients with a wide range of diagnoses like impaired hearing. Also, our phlebotomy staff will perform blood draws on children and teens so they do not have to go to an outside lab for this procedure. The exterior of the building will feature a garden with a gazebo and art for patient family use.
Recognition opportunities are available for donors who wish to make an investment of $25,000 or more in the Center for Advanced Pediatrics. These gifts give you the opportunity to make a profound impact in the lives of children with complex conditions, and helps us achieve our goals of providing the best integrated care possible for these kids and their families.
