Before participating in any organized sport, players should see their doctor for a pre-participation physical exam.

The focus on weight management in wrestling is a modern trend that has no scientific proof as to its effectiveness. In fact, studies show that an athlete with a healthy weight management program has the advantage.

  • Assess the body composition of every wrestler before the season. Wrestlers younger than 16 years old with less than seven percent body fat, and wrestlers older than 16 years with less than five percent body fat need medical clearance before they are allowed to compete.
  • Consider setting limits: National wrestling governing bodies are considering limiting adolescent body fat at nine percent for boys and 15 percent for girls.
