Intestinal Rehabilitation of Children's (IROC) provides comprehensive care through a range of services, from medical to nutritional to surgical management.

Our Mission

Our mission is to enhance the lives of children and young adults who have intestinal failure. We provide multidisciplinary patient care of the highest quality through optimal disease management approaches. We strive to achieve our mission by:

Common Conditions

We treat a variety of intestinal disorders stemming from surgery, a congenital defect or another disease. Common conditions we treat include:

Short bowel syndrome, typically caused by:

  • Gastoschisis
  • Intestinal atresia and stenosis
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis
  • Volvulus

Congenital (present at birth) defects or diseases, such as:

  • Bowel atresias
  • Congenital diarrheal disorders
  • Malrotation
  • Microvillus inclusion disease

Other diseases, disorders or illnesses, such as:

  • Autoimmune bowel disease
  • Hirschsprung's disease
  • Pseudo-obstruction
  • Malabsorption diseases and disorders
  • Motility disorders

Meet the Team

We offer a multidisciplinary team approach that includes close interaction among our intestinal rehabilitation physicians (pediatric hepatologists and gastroenterologists), nutritionists, family support services and pediatric surgical services. This collaboration among pediatric-trained specialists provides better long-term outcomes for children.

Our team participates in research to further our understanding of pediatric intestinal failure and to identify new and/or better treatment options for children with intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome.
