340B Prescription Drug Discount Program

The federal 340B drug pricing program provides access to discounted outpatient prescription drugs for certain healthcare facilities, including hospitals serving a disproportionate share of Medicaid and uninsured patients.

In 2005, Congress enacted legislation that included freestanding children’s hospitals in the program. The program allows Children’s to reduce pharmaceutical expenses, utilize savings to enhance services and care for more of Georgia’s children. Children’s is working with the Health Resources and Services Administration to provide new regulations that better govern how this program works and who may participate.
