The Kohl's Activity Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite is an oasis of childhood normalcy in a clinical world run by adults. Maintained and directed under the guidance of Children's Child and Adolescent Life program (Child Life), patient floor activity centers let sick children leave their hospital rooms to do what children are supposed to do—play.
Open daily, and available to patients, parents, and siblings, the Kohl's Activity Center, located on the third floor of the Children's Scottish Rite campus, provides a bright, clean and colorful atmosphere. Here, without leaving the patient floor, children can escape the clinical atmosphere of hospitalization into a world that puts them more in mind of home. Here, too, parents can spend time with a child at play rather than with a hospital patient.
The Kohl's Activity Center, officially opened on Nov. 7, 2002, featuring an arcade/amusement park theme that all enjoy. Amenities include a special infant area designed for safe play, a teen space equipped with CD listening stations, arcade/video games, toys, computers, a kitchen area, an aquarium and even a large screen television. A new Immunosuppressed Room within the Center will allow patients with suppressed immune systems to access an Activity Center for the first time with the same HEPA filtered air technology used in their patient rooms. The Immunosuppressed Room has its own infant/toddler play area, CD listening area, video games, craft table, bookshelves and large screen TV.
As part of Children's mission to enhance the lives of children through excellence in patient care, research and education, the Child Life program serves a vital function in meeting the emotional needs of children whose lives have been disrupted by disease or injury. Child Life's own mission statement emphasizes reducing "the impact of stressful or traumatic life events ... of infants, children, youth and families," and embracing "the value of play as a healing modality."
Thanks to the generosity of the people at Kohl's, Children's patients who are able to leave their rooms have a place to be just children.
Thank you, Kohl's!
