Introduction
Dr. Bruce is an Associate Professor of orthopedics at Emory University School of Medicine and has been on the medical staff at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for nearly 25 years. He has held numerous leadership positions serving as Division Director at Emory, as well as Medical Staff President and Chief of Orthopaedics at Egleston hospital. He has also served as a member of the Children’s Foundation and System Board of Trustees and has been integral in the development and implementation of numerous measures to improve care for children with orthopedic conditions within Children’s.
Dr. Bruce attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine before moving to Minneapolis, Minn., for a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota. He then completed fellowships in pediatric orthopedics and spinal deformity at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., and Shriners’ Hospital, Twin Cities Unit. Dr. Bruce completed additional fellowship training in limb lengthening and deformity correction at Fairview Riverside Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.
Dr. Bruce cares for most pediatric orthopedic conditions specializing in management of children with spinal deformities, as well as those with neuromuscular conditions. He was instrumental in the development of the accelerated discharge pathway used in patients undergoing spinal fusion at Children’s and has been published extensively in this area. Dr. Bruce currently serves as Medical Director of the Neuromuscular Program at Children’s, and is tasked with improving care for children with various conditions, such as cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
Dr. Bruce has on numerous occasions been voted “Best Doctor” by Atlanta magazine and has also received “Teacher of the Year” accolades from Emory orthopedic residents. His teaching and patient care impact the careers of numerous medical students, undergraduates and nurses who have spent time with him.

Bradin Maddox, son of a fallen Georgia police officer, has a rare disorder—septo- optic dysplasia—that is causing his feet and ankles to buckle inward, placing pressure on his hips and extreme discomfort when he tries to move. Robert W. Bruce, MD, a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is performing surgeries to realign Bradin’s feet and ankles to regain mobility without pain.
