The School Program at Children's
School at our Pediatric Hospital
School is a big part of every child’s life. When a child’s life is interrupted by an illness or a hospital stay, it is important that he continues with as many normal activities as possible. The School Program at Children’s helps patients with their educational needs.
We contribute to a child’s wellness by offering ways to complete school assignments and keep up with classes. Patients have a chance to socialize with peers and take part in activities that can boost their self-esteem. Your child can receive attendance credit at his school for taking part in the Children’s School Program. All services are free to patients.
Our Teachers & School Tutors for Patients
Our teachers are highly qualified, Georgia-certified educators. They are trained in a variety of areas including elementary, middle, high school and special education, providing quality educational support to our child patients.
- Our teachers tell your child’s school about his hospital stay. They ask for assignments and coordinate lessons with your child’s regular teacher(s).
- Our teachers can help parents learn about additional support and resources available through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 and Student Support Teams.
- Our teachers can make referrals for home instruction if your child’s doctor says that he is too sick to go back to school.
- Progress notes are sent to your child’s regular school to show attendance and assignments completed in the hospital.
Our Schoolrooms
Children’s at Egleston and Children’s at Scottish Rite each have a schoolroom with state-approved textbooks, computers and other learning tools.
- Schoolrooms are staffed with teachers and volunteers.
- Patients are encouraged to come to the schoolroom as soon as they are medically able.
- Beside instruction may be available to patients who need to remain in their hospital room.
- Instruction is available in some outpatient areas at specific times of the day. Patients who have routine outpatient visits are encouraged to bring their books and assignments, so the teacher in that area can work with them.
Back to School
Our teachers assist in developing appropriate educational plans for patients with ongoing needs.
