Pediatric Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Center for Craniofacial Disorders offers a pediatric craniofacial and plastic surgery fellowship at one of the largest and busiest pediatric hospitals in the country.

Experience in the Field

In 2008, the Children’s Center for Craniofacial Disorders was the highest volume center in the country for treating children with cleft lip and palate.* In addition to treating clefts, fellows will treat children with a variety of facial traumas and rare craniofacial syndromes, including:
  • Apert syndrome
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Crouzon syndrome
  • Malocclusion

Advanced Technology

Fellows will be treating patients from birth to age 21 from metro Atlanta, Georgia and across the country by using advanced pediatric technology, including:

  • Mandibular Distraction
Mandibular distraction is an option that provides relief by opening the airway and improving the child’s ability to eat.
  • Nasal Alveolar Molding (NAM)
Prior to surgery to repair a cleft, some patients will require orthodontic treatment in order to guide the growth of the mouth in the right direction, eventually aiding in the correction process.
  • Laser Treatment of Hemangiomas
While some involution can be expected, hemangiomas often require treatment for functional and aesthetic problems.
  • Bone Substitutes (Hydroxyapatite Cement)
Bone substitutes may prevent the need for harvesting bone grafts from the patient’s own body.
  • Endoscopic Torticollis Treatment
Torticollis, or wry neck, is a condition that occurs when the sternocleidomastoid muscle of the neck becomes scarred and shortened.

Groundbreaking Research

Additionally, the fellow will participate in ongoing research projects at the Georgia Institute of Technology Craniofacial and Pediatric Laboratories. Our expectation is to offer the appropriate training for a physician to be able to provide all aspects of care in the areas of pediatric and craniofacial surgery, in anticipation of his continued activity in this specialty.
