Children's Pediatric Research Center

Research is a cornerstone of the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta mission to enhance the lives of children. In conjunction with Emory University School of Medicine, Children’s seeks answers to the most challenging childhood medical conditions through teaching and research. By constantly developing new techniques, treatments and cures, Children’s is committed to advancing pediatric research and medicine.

Research Center Open House

The Children’s Pediatric Research Center open house and Ribbon Cutting with Children’s and Emory Leaders took place March 25, 2009. The Center will conduct research on new drugs, treatments and therapies.

The Children's Pediatric Research Center is a new clinical interaction research site of the Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI). The ACTSI is a multi-institutional partnership led by Emory University.

Established in November 2008 and located at Children’s Egleston, the center is designed to provide the necessary support services and infrastructure for investigators conducting pediatric clinical research. The center’s facilities include:

  • A core research lab to conduct scientific research
  • Bionutrition services to help with a participant’s nutritional needs
  • Research pharmacy services for easy access to needed medicine
  • A four-bed inpatient research unit for patients who need to stay for longer periods
  • A four-bed outpatient research unit for patients who can go home at the end of the day
  • The center is available for patients coming to Children’s primarily for research visits. Depending upon the particular study, participants may visit the outpatient unit for a variety of procedures, such as:
  • Vital sign measurements
  • Infusions
  • Phlebotomy
  • Bionutrition

The Children’s Pediatric Research Center team works closely with care providers throughout each visit.

Led by Howard Katzenstein, M.D., Medical Director, and Christine Spainhour, R.N., R.R.T., C.C.R.C., Clinical Research Unit Manager, the Children’s Pediatric Research Center strives to become a leading pediatric clinical research facility.
