Physician Inspires Patient to Follow in His Footsteps

When 5-year-old Seth Marcus entered the office of Children’s Stanley Cohen, M.D., suffering with severe abdominal pain and vomiting, Seth received more than a diagnosis and a cure—he received a career path, job security and a mentor for life.

Marcus was diagnosed with functional abdominal pain and started receiving treatment from Dr. Cohen. It was during this time that Seth said he became fascinated with Dr. Cohen’s work and his treatment of pediatric patients. “As I progressed through my training, Dr. Cohen and his practice always served as the light at the end of the tunnel. Their practice validated my aspirations and proved to me that the practice model I sought not only existed but could thrive,” said Marcus.

While he was attending high school, Marcus spent time observing Dr. Cohen performing endoscopies on his young patients, always asking questions, with a true passion to learn more. Marcus’s parents can recall him saying at an early age that he was going to be Dr. Cohen when he grew up.

Marcus enrolled in medical school at Tufts University and continued to seek guidance and support from his former specialist. After completing medical school, his pediatric residency at Emory University School of Medicine and finally his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Northwestern’s Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Marcus accepted a position on Dr. Cohen’s team at Children’s.

“After completed my residency, I knew that Children’s was a world-class pediatric hospital. I had a wonderful experience throughout my residency and coming back to Children’s has felt like coming home,” said Marcus.

While things have certainly come full circle for Dr. Marcus, Dr. Cohen said he is thrilled to have a former patient as a member of his prestigious team.
