Highlights

Heart Transplant Video

  • More than 400 pediatric kidney transplants, which makes Children’s one of only a few pediatric hospitals to reach such a milestone*
  • Ranked among the country’s top three pediatric kidney programs for pediatric kidney transplant volumes*
  • A national leader in pediatric dialysis programs

Staff at Children’s provide dedicated diagnostic and treatment services for children with complex and lifelong kidney disorders, high blood pressure and fluid electrolyte imbalances. Our kidney transplant team strives for the most comprehensive care from dialysis through pediatric kidney transplantation in a caring and supportive environment.

  • Our end-stage renal disease (ESRD) program offers lifesaving dialysis at Georgia’s only pediatric dialysis unit and managed an average of 38 pediatric dialysis cases a month and more than 2,500 pediatric patient visits in 2007.
  • Children’s performed 19 pediatric kidney transplants in 2007. Seven were "preemptive," meaning a child had a kidney transplant before beginning dialysis. Since dialysis is a costly and time consuming treatment, preemptive pediatric kidney transplants can get kids back to being kids.
  • In 2007, 53 percent of pediatric kidney transplants performed were from a living related donor.
