Treating Children in Metro Atlanta and throughout Georgia

Through a multidisciplinary staff and a comprehensive disease-management program, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Asthma Center offers the highest quality of care and addresses the needs of treating children in asthma, allergy, pulmonology and environmental health. We treat each patient as an individual and work closely with parents and primary care providers to determine the best treatment plan. The type of treatment needed depends on the severity of the child’s condition.

Respiratory issues are the primary reason for admission to Children’s. This is not surprising given that Georgia’s rate of asthma cases in children is one of the highest in the nation.

In fact, more than 200,000 children age 18 and younger have asthma.

  • 30 percent of those children do not attend regular checkups for their condition.
  • 65 percent do not have a written care plan to manage their condition.

When children cannot manage their asthma symptoms, it can result in unnecessary Emergency department visits and life-threatening situations. In 2006 alone, diagnoses of unexpected asthma with exacerbation accounted for more than 2,600 patient visits to Children’s at Hughes Spalding Emergency department.

That is why having a specialized asthma center is crucial to our community.
