Neuroimaging Technology for Children

Leveraging the Latest Neuroimaging Technology for Your Child

The Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Neurosciences Program is using advanced diagnosis, treatment and neuroimaging technology to provide better outcomes for your child.

Treatments & Neuroimaging Technology

Treatments:

  • Brain Tumor Surgery
A new high-field strength intra-operative MRI (iMRI) system gives our neurosurgeons important clinical data about the patient’s brain during surgery.
  • Cognitive Remediation
Eight, hour-long sessions include 20 children with neurological disorders and involves pre-and-post testing, in addition to customized activities based on individual neuropsychological evaluations.
  • Epilepsy Surgery
A multidisciplinary team reviews every surgical case and makes treatment recommendations from the perspective of each specialty.
  • Rhizotomy Surgery
Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy reduces abnormally increased muscle tone, which results in reduced spasticity while sensation and strength are spared.
  • Subtraction Ictal Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Co-registered to MRI (SISCOM)
SISCOM combines nuclear medicine and MRI to develop treatment plans for children with epilepsy.
  • Wada Test
A Wada test enables the clinician to determine cerebral dominance and to evaluate memory function in each hemisphere of a child's brain.

Neuroimaging Technology:

  • iMRI
The iMRI produces high-quality images that allow surgeons to better identify tumors and lesions during surgery.
  • EEG
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures the electrical activity in the brain, called brain waves.
  • Dense Array EEG
This diagnosis tool allows physicians to better identify and localize the electrical abnormalities, typically found in patients diagnosed with epilepsy.
  • fMRI
The fMRI is a technology that takes advantage of measuring functional skills through the use of MRI technology.
  • Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) Fiber Tracking
DTI fiber tracking is innovative technology that can help surgeons plan for surgery.
  • Mock Scanner
The mock scanner allows patients to undergo practice MRI sessions with clinicians and child life specialists, helping to reduce their anxiety prior to going into the real scanner.  It's also being used for clinical and research studies requiring functional MRI (fMRI).
