Pediatric Cardiac Clinical Research
As part of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta strategic plan, pediatric cardiac clinical research is at the forefront of our efforts. We strive to advance the prevention and treatment of congenital and acquired pediatric heart disorders. Our researchers work with the Children’s Pediatric Research Centerto help with this endeavor.
We routinely collaborate with prestigious research institutes, such as Emory University School of Medicine, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine and the Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) to initiate and conduct clinical and translational research.
Most of our efforts will involve connecting basic research with patient care to bring effective therapies to children more quickly, often called translational medicine.
Our areas of clinical research include:
Our research efforts include studies involving:
- Doppler imaging, 3-D echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI)
- An improved understanding of the child’s reaction to surgery and anesthesia along with the creation of new procedures and treatment options
- Minimally invasive surgeries such as ventricular and atrial septal defect closure. These procedures do not require cardiopulmonary bypass, which can cause clotting abnormalities and short-term neurocognitive defects
