Hemophilia
Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding, or coagulation, disorder. Children with hemophilia can have excessive bleeding because oflow levels, or complete absence, of specific proteins called “factors” in their blood that are necessary for clotting.
Types of Hemophilia
The two main forms of hemophilia are:
- Hemophilia A—caused by a lack of the blood-clotting factor VIII; accounts for approximately 85 percent of persons with hemophilia
- Hemophilia B—also known as Christmas disease is caused by a deficiency of factor IX
