Your Child's First Dental Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend a visit to the dentist when your child's first teeth appear or at least by 12 months of age. Most likely, your child's pediatrician will tell you when your child needs to visit a pediatric dentist.

During the initial visit, the dentist teaches you about good mouth care to help prevent future problems with your child's teeth and gums. Depending on your child's age and level of cooperation, future dental visits may include oral hygiene instructions, examination, tooth cleansing, a fluoride treatment and dental X-rays. Make sure to visit the dentist regularly -- this will allow for the best treatment and care for your child's teeth.
