Principal Investigator Profiles

As researchers are quietly working behind the scene either conducting basic science research or seeking answers to many of the most difficult childhood medical conditions through clinical studies, most likely they are also involved in a clinical practice or teaching. "Profile P.I." (Principal Investigator) recognizes the many talented and dedicated researchers making a difference one at a time.

  • John E. Riski, Ph.D., C.C.C.-S., F.A.S.H.A.
    Dr. Riski has been changing the face of craniofacial and speech research for decades. He has authored more than 200 abstracts and presentations, 10 different book chapters and 40 referenced journal articles that span the length of his long career.
  • Richard Jones, Ph.D.
    For more than 25 years, Dr. Jones has been a leader in the field of radiology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research. His work has led to innovative clinical treatment for patients. 
  • Miriam B. Vos, M.D., M.S.P.H.
    Dr. Vos is a pediatric hepatologist for Children’s and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. In her dual roles, she has access to both clinical and research medicine. This translational approach appeals to her and enhances the care provided at Children’s.
  • Michael DeGuzman, M.P.H.
    As a research advocate, teacher and mentor, Michael DeGuzman is in the mix of pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s. His daily goal remains the same: provide the best possible care to children.
  • Howard M. Katzenstein, M.D.
    Dr. Howard M. Katzenstein is at the forefront of innovative pediatric cancer research and an integral member of the new Children’s Pediatric Research Center.
  • Risa Abramsky, R.N.
    A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse at Children's at Egleston who received the Dudley Moore Nursing and Allied Health Research Fund.
  • Michele Audet, M.M.Sc.,P.T.,A.T.P.
    A Level IV Physical Therapist who recently received a Dudley L. Moore Nursing and Allied Health Research Fund award.
  • Amy Baxter, M.D. 
    A member of the Children's emergency medicine community, who has has been involved in many interesting studies related to uncovering ways in which unnecessary suffering can be avoided.
  • Stan Cohen, M.D. 
    Dr. Stanley Cohen, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children’s, who, along with his team, is working to improve the diagnosis and treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) for children.  
  • Colleen Coulter-O'Berry, P.T., M.S., P.C.S.
    A physical therapist at the Children's Limb Deficiency Center and Team Leader of the Limb Deficiency program who also received the Dudley Moore Nursing and Allied Health Research Fund.
  • Helen Diehl, R.N.
    A nurse in the cardiac catheterization lab at Children's who started an investigation into the efficacy of a new post-catheterization patch reducing patient discomfort and hospital stay.
  • Anne Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., C.P.N.P.
    The principal investigator in a study examining why children with severe asthma respond differently to colds and upper respiratory infections than the general population.
  • Lilly Cheng Immergluck, M.D.
    An infectious disease specialist at Children's who is studying the occurrence of healthy children who are colonized or become infected with CA-MRSA.  
  • Ann Johnson, N.P. and Cathy Jordan, N.P.
    Children's Aflac Cancer Center pediatric nurse practitioners who have undertaken a study to help improve care and education for patients with brain tumors.
  • Jacqueline Kosawaski, R.N.  
    A nurse in the Children's Emergency Department who has been researching the use of a new vascular viewing tool, which uses infrared imaging, to better locate patients' veins and decrease stress and pain when making intravenous access.  
  • Raymond T. Morrissy, M.D.
    A distinguished Orthopaedic surgeon who has completed numerous leading-edge research projects. 
  • Mark R. Rigby, M.D., Ph.D.
    A Critical Care physician whose research interest is in diabetes and islet transplantation.
  • Christina Ryan-Ramey, R.N., M.S.N
    A clinical research nurse at Children's who is exploring the relationship between pediatric nursing knowledge, critical thinking ability of a newly hired nurse, selected demographic variables, and the length of orientation required to achieve clinical competencies.  
  • Bahig Shehata, M.D.
    The System Director of Pathology at Children's whose research interest includes the extent and causes of stillbirth in the United States.
  • Arlene Stecenko, M.D.
    A leader in pulmonary research whose focus is studying the pre-diabetic phase in Cystic Fibrosis and the molecules that regulate lung injury and repair. 
  • Barbara J. Stoll, M.D. 
    Dr. Stoll is the George W. Brumley, Jr. Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University, Medical Director of Children’s at Egleston and President of the Emory Children’s Center. She has created worldwide research efforts into medical conditions that can complicate the health and well being of neonates.
  • Robert Vincent, M.D.
    Director of the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiac Catheterization Lab working to improve patient care and recovery through research and advances in cardiac devices.
  • Joseph K. Williams, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P and Barbara Boyan, Ph.D. 
    The Director of Clinical Research at the Children’s Center for Craniofacial Disorders with numerous studies, including a joint effort with Georgia Tech and Emory University.
