Technology-Dependent ICU

Why Children's?

The 11-bed Technology-Dependent Intensive Care Unit (TICU) at Children’s at Scottish Rite provides personal care and high-tech treatments for children from birth to age 21. Our staff uses the latest technology and equipment, sized just for children, for a wide range of illnesses and injuries. At the TICU, our emphasis is on pulmonary patients and children with congenital anomalies.

With more than 3,700 patient days in 2004, the TICU at Children’s constantly seeks new ways to help children recover faster and return to being a healthy kid sooner.

Family-Centered Care

At the TICU, our child-friendly department was designed with children in mind—from the specialized pediatric technology to the animal décor that takes children to an imaginary jungle.

The TICU staff addresses growth and development in each child. The team understands the value of teaching the child and family while in the hospital. After leaving Children’s, coordination of community resources is essential to transition TICU patients with special needs into their homes. The team works with families and caregivers to empower their voices in decision making and supports them through training programs for day-to-day activities.

TICU Programs and Features

  • Transport Services
The transport team responds to emergency calls and provides transportation within Children's, as well as from other hospitals, for the medically complex, technology-dependent child.
  • Referrals
Telephone consultations by medical and ancillary staff are available 24-hours a day.

Expert Care

Clinical care is provided in a safe environment that recognizes diversity and the need for confidentiality and trust. The TICU staff participates in on-going education activities, performance improvement monitoring, research and other activities that increase the knowledge and understanding the healthcare needs of a critically ill child. The multidisciplinary healthcare team provides for all critical medical needs and includes intensivists, neonatologists and pediatric surgeons who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
