Jay BerkelhamerJay E. Berkelhamer, M.D.

Chief Academic Officer

Jay E. Berkelhamer, M.D., is Senior Vice President, Chief Academic Officer, and has been with Children’s since September 1999. He provides leadership and support for Children’s Medical Staff Organization, employed physicians practices, research activities and medical education. Before joining Children’s, Dr. Berkelhamer served as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics of the Henry Ford Medical Group in Detroit, Mich., one of the nation’s largest group practices.

Berkelhamer received a bachelor’s degree in Zoology and a medical degree from the University of Michigan. After his residency, he spent two years in public health services as Deputy Chief of Pediatrics in the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital of Norfolk, Va. He then joined the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine, where he served as Associate Chairman of the Pediatric department and Pediatric Residency Program Director. He was a fellow at the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow in 1978, and is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Berkelhamer recently served as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) President and as the Immediate Past President of the AAP October 2007 through October 2008. He is also active in his community and serves on the boards of The Ronald McDonald House and Camp Twin Lakes.
