What is Spina Bifida?
Spina bifida is a birth defect where the bones do not form properly around the spinal cord. It can happen anywhere along the spine. It usually develops during the first month of pregnancy.
Children with spina bifida can have medical issues, including:
- Seizures
- Trouble sleeping
- Bowel and bladder problems
- Hydrocephalus, excess fluid around the brain and spine
- Natural latex rubber allergies

Camp Krazy Legs
Children’s, Camp Twin Lakes and the Spina Bifida Association of Georgia have partnered to offer Camp Krazy Legs. This summer day camp and overnight camp is for children and teens with spina bifida who meet the eligibility criteria. This progressive program helps children and teens learn, develop and practice independent living skills in a fun camp format, using games, group activities, workshops, sports and community outings to teach and reinforce these life skills.
Focus areas include:
- Physical/mobility skills
- Social/communication skills
- Self-healthcare/medical skills (bladder and bowel training, dressing)
- Recreation/leisure/sports
- Educational/vocational skills
- Cognitive skills (memory, sequencing, organization, decision making, problem solving)
- Integration into the home, school, community setting
- Leadership training (ages 16 to 21)
Day Camp: June 14-18, 2010
Chattahoochee Nature Center, Roswell, Georgia
For ages 5-10—Focus is on teaching independence in self-care, organizational skills, life skills, socializing, meeting new friends and of course learning and participating in new recreational activities.
Overnight Camp: July 4-10, 2010
Camp Twin Lakes, Rutledge, Georgia
For ages 10-21—Focus is on complete independence, increasing social skills, leadership skills and continued focus on network and support from peers and adults to further grow in independence and prepare for life outside of the home and transitioning to work and college.
