Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU)

The Children's Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) knows what it takes to rebuild the everyday skills that matter most. From brain injury to spinal cord injury to the many other conditions we treat, we involve the whole family to heal the physical and emotional needs of every child, adolescent and young adult.

Children's provides inpatient physical, occupational, speech therapy and audiology services 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We offer a continuum of care for patients needing rehabilitation services. When a patient has achieved their functional goals and is medically stable, Children’s offers several options for continued care following discharge from the CIRU. Many discharged patients continue receiving rehabilitative care at the Children’s Day Rehabilitation Program. The focus of treatment in this setting is to encourage further functional gains and transition patients to prior activities. Children’s also offers outpatient rehabilitation services at nine metro area outpatient locations.

  • Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is one of only a few hospitals nationwide that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
  • Our interdisciplinary approach gives patients a strong foundation to build skills and independence.

Our approach to pediatric rehabilitative therapy focuses on rebuilding skills in as normal a way as possible. Using everyday activities as the basis for therapy is more motivating for the patient, enabling them to work hard and reach their potential. Our rehabilitation philosophy is to help assure that each child, adolescent and young adult regains and maintains those important aspects of life (CIRU Outcomes).

The staff at Children’s is dedicated to creating a place of hope and healing for children, adolescents and young adults, as well as providing a haven of support and understanding for their families. We understand the importance of creating an environment especially suited to children, young or old. We know that children are not just small adults, and that is evident in the many features found throughout Children's Rehabilitation Services.
