Audiology Services
Identification of your child's hearing loss immediately after birth and treatment by an audiologist are essential to helping infants, children, adolescents and young adults develop speech and language skills. Our Audiology department at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta works with patients to identify childhood hearing loss and deliver a wide range of effective rehabilitation services. The Audiology department has several assessment methods available to evaluate infants and other difficult-to-test children, as well as to identify specific types of hearing problems.
Assessment capabilities include:
- Comprehensive Audiometric Evaluations—pure tone air and bone conduction and behavioral testing to determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
- Tympanometry and Impedance Audiology—for evaluation of middle ear function.
- Central Auditory Processing Testing—to identify problems with understanding speech, following directions or listening.
- Auditory Brainstem Response Testing—to assess hearing and brainstem functioning.
- Otoacoustic Emission Testing—to detect cochlear damage.
If hearing aids, cochlear implants or other assistive listening devices are needed, our staff is experienced in auditory training techniques to aid in rehabilitation.
As part of our cochlear implant program for children, adolescents and young adults who are profoundly deaf, the audiologists provide assessment, programming and continued follow-up care of the implant components after surgery.
Through the use of the Auditory-Verbal Approach, deaf and hard-of-hearing patients can learn to listen, understand spoken language and speak.
