Cranial Remolding Program

The Cranial Remolding Program offers solutions for infants (3 to 18 months of age) diagnosed with plagiocephaly or brachycephaly. Through the Orthotics and Prosthetics Department, the program uses the FDA-approved STARband cranial remolding orthosis.

The Cranial Remolding Program’s multidisciplinary team consists of American Board Certified orthotists, a physical therapist and the referring physician. The Children’s cranial remolding professionals have more than 60 years combined experience in the treatment of plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and pediatric torticollis. The team works closely with the parent and child to achieve the desired outcome.

Program Highlights

The goals are set to reach the best possible results for the child’s specific condition.

With a physician’s prescription for a STARband, an initial consultation is scheduled to thoroughly assess the baseline measurements of the child’s head. The child is also assessed for torticollis and other related orthopaedic conditions.   STARbands are custom-made for each child, and will be ready approximately 2 weeks following the initial consultation appointment.

Following the initial consultation, insurance benefits will be verified regarding coverage of the STARband.  Insurance specialists are available to answer your questions.

Physicians may refer a child for head-shape monitoring only, without progressing to a STARband.  There is a $30 per visit fee for this service, which is not covered by insurance or Medicaid.

After receiving a STARband, the team will provide ongoing instructions to parents in all aspects of band care and maintenance. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every two weeks until completion of treatment.

During the course of STARband treatment, measurements of the child’s head are taken to document and track the rate of correction.

Children’s staff provides treatment updates to the referring physician upon request.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday.

STARband™

The STARbandis an FDA - approved thermoplastic shell with a soft foam liner. It is custom-molded to the infant’s head. As the child grows, the STARband™ acts as a guide to gradually allow the head to reshape. The band is available by prescription only.

It is easy to wear and easy to clean.

The band can be decorated with fun patterns and designs.

STARscanner™

The STARscanner™ is an FDA-approved laser data acquisition system. The scanner records three-dimensional (3D) information about the infant’s head shape in 1.5 seconds.

The non-invasive laser is safe for the eyes and non-invasive.

The scanner eliminates the need for the traditional plaster casting procedure to create a mold of the head.

Scans provide ongoing quantitative data for physicians, orthotic practitioners and parents to monitor changes in head shape.
