Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Procedure Preps

Follow the directions below to get your child ready for their test. Some special MRI exams have additional directions. The MRI staff will provide you with these directions.

If you do not follow the directions, we will have to reschedule your child’s visit.

Sedation (sleep medicine)

If your child will be sedated (sleep medicine) for the test, you should receive a phone call one to three days before to the test. We will:

  • Remind you of your child’s visit
  • Make sure you get the eating and drinking directions before the test

Follow these directions if your child is being sedated:

Six hours before the test—No milk, formula, solid food or orange juice. Your child can have clear liquids, such as water, Gatorade, broth and Jell-O without fruit.

Four hours before the test—No breast milk. Your child can have clear liquids, such as water, Gatorade, broth and Jell-O without fruit.

Two hours before the test—Nothing to eat or drink

Medicine: Give your child any normal medicines with a small sip of water

MRI Safety

The MRI machine uses a very strong magnet. You will be asked to fill out a form about any metal parts inside your child’s body or in his pockets.

  • All metal will need to be placed in a locker outside the MRI room
  • No metal snaps, zippers or shiny metallic fabric on your child’s clothing
  • No metal hair barrettes, rubber bands or earrings
  • Your child may be asked to change into a hospital gown
  • Check any toys or stuffed animals for metal parts before bringing them to the MRI area
