Pediatric Neurosciences Programs & Services

The Children’s Neurosciences program features a team of 15 pediatric neurologists (six of whom are also epileptologists), five pediatric neurosurgeons, four pediatric neuro-oncologists, five pediatric neuroradiologists and nine pediatric neuropsychologists. Each pediatric professional specializes in a particular discipline.

This approach enables us to provide a broad continuum of care to our patients. Our multidisciplinary team can treat patients with a variety congenital and acquired neurological conditions at the same location, such as neuro spine, head trauma, brain tumor and epilepsy.

Programs

 Neurology

The Children's Neurology program is committed to providing quality comprehensive care to children with mild to complex neurological disorders. This includes conditions of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

Neuropsychology Whether your child needs an assessment of injury or a scan to see how his brain functions, our pediatric-trained neuropsychologists provide many different types of evaluations to best identify your child's condition.

Neurosurgery

Our neurosurgeons and pediatric plastic surgeons partner on more than 100 cases each year, providing a unique multi-specialty surgical collaboration offered by few pediatric hospitals in the Southeast.

Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Program

Approximately 3,000 children are diagnosed with brain tumors in the United States each year, making brain tumors the most common solid tumor in children. At the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with Children's Neurosciences Program, we treat more than 100 pediatric brain tumor patients each year.


Concussion Program

Our pediatric concussion program combines the expertise of five subspecialties to deliver an individualized care plan for each patient. Our team is actively involved in concussion research and focused on quality initiatives to improve our approach to care. With a dedicated concussion nurse, we are able to help direct patients to the appropriate subspecialists who can help them return to normal activities.

Pediatric Epilepsy Center

Our Epilepsy Center is a Level 4 pediatric epilepsy center according to the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)—their highest level of designation. Each year the specially trained staff treats hundreds of patients—nearly 1,000 epilepsy discharges, which is more than double the national average. We provide neurodiagnostic monitoring, clinical trials and both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options.

Neurocritical Care Program

Children’s has the only pediatric Level II trauma centers in the state—a special term given to a hospital because of its transport, emergency surgical, education and injury prevention services.

Pediatric Spine Care

Our team offers specialized care for children and teens with complex neurological spine disorders. From congenital conditions to spine trauma, the team takes a multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise from neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists and orthopaedic surgeons.

Highlights and Accomplishments

  • Children’s was among the first pediatric hospitals in the world to implement the high-field strength iMRI technology.
  • Children's has brought other leading-edge technology to Georgia, including dense array EEG, functional MRI (fMRI), one of the largest epilepsy monitoring units in the country and is among the first to use a Gliasite catheter to treat childhood brain tumors.
  • Children’s is home to one of the nation’s leading inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs.
