Future Expansion of the ECMO Center

Apheresis Program

The ECMO Center plans to provide apheresis therapy to patients in the Pediatric and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. Apheresis is a general term for all of the processes by which cells are separated out of whole blood.

Apheresis therapy is used for patients who have sickle cell disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, meningococcemia, septic shock and transplant incompatibilities. It is also used to collect stem cells for patients planning to undergo chemotherapy.
