Georgia Child Traumatic Stress Initiative

The Georgia Child Traumatic Stress Initiative is a SAMHSA-funded collaboration between the Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CSHC) and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of Emory University School of Medicine.

The Georgia Child Traumatic Stress Initiative aims to: (a) improve behavioral health services for maltreated children in Georgia by expanding implementation of, and access to, evidence-based behavioral health treatment for trauma-related symptoms and behaviors, and (b) develop the Georgia behavioral health workforce by building capacity for evidence-based treatment of children’s trauma-related symptoms and behaviors. The project has four objectives:

1. Expand evidence-based behavioral health treatment services for children evaluated in the CSHC by hiring additional staff, providing training in evidence-based treatment models, and providing trauma informed services to children which include:

  • Parent consultations
  • Diagnostic evaluations
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) for 3 to 18 year olds
  • Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for 2 to 7 year olds

2. Provide informational webinars on behavioral health topics to child service agencies

3. Build capacity in Georgia for evidence-based treatment of maltreated children’s trauma-related symptoms and behaviors through:

  • A didactic two-day training in TF-CBT to clinicians from DBHDD-contracted provider organizations in Georgia
  • Training in TF-CBT and mentoring in the application of evidence-based practices to behavioral health clinicians serving maltreated children in rural North Georgia

4. Pilot TF-CBT via telemedicine at the CSHC to traumatized children and their families in rural North Georgia
