Children's Healthcare of Atlanta becomes first pediatric imaging program to achieve Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence recognition
Children's Designated an American College of Radiology (ACR) Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence
ATLANTA (April 3, 2014) — Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is the third organization in the nation designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence™ (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). As the only DICOE-recognized pediatric facility in the country, and the only DICOE-recognized facility in the South, Children's Radiology department demonstrates dedication to quality and the safety of its patients.
The DICOE program, which represents the pinnacle of medical imaging care, is an achievement that goes beyond accreditation to recognize best-quality imaging practices and diagnostic care. This includes a comprehensive assessment of the entire medical imaging enterprise, including structure and outcomes.
The DICOE designation recognizes excellence at multiple levels — including the professional staff, technology, policies and procedures the organization follows, image quality, safety and patient results.
“There is a great deal of satisfaction in being recognized with the DICOE award because it confirms our dedication and success in caring for our patients," said Stephen Simoneaux, M.D., medical director of radiology at Children's at Egleston and Hughes Spalding. “Every patient who enters our facility will know they're receiving care that reflects our investment in and dedication to exceptional medical imaging technology and care delivery.”
As the largest pediatric radiology program in the country, Children's performs more than 240,000 exams a year. Patients receive care from board certified radiologists with advanced training and certification in pediatric imaging. These caregivers use dose-reducing techniques to cut CT and X-ray radiation exposure up to 50 percent compared to adult facilities.
In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in all modalities they provide, and in which the ACR offers an accreditation program. Another requirement is to participate in the ACR Dose Index Registry® and General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as Image Gently® and Image Wisely®.
