In 1999, Congress enacted the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program to provide children’s hospitals with federal graduate medical education (GME) support comparable to the GME support provided to adult teaching hospitals through Medicare.
CHGME funds train more than a third of all pediatricians and nearly half of all pediatric specialties across nearly 60 independent children’s teaching hospitals. The program is critical to ensuring Children’s has a workforce of specialty physicians and helps address the severe physician shortage by attracting physicians to Georgia for residency where a majority will remain and practice.
We would like to thank Sen. Johnny Isakson for sponsoring reauthorization legislation that the president signed into law in March. Of the 2013 graduating class in this state, 70 percent of the physicians stayed in Georgia. We are working with Rep. Jack Kingston and the Appropriations Committee to secure funding for this reauthorization.
